New Hippo Techie: Free e-mail programs

Mozilla, the open-source foundation behind the Firefox browser, is pulling resources from one of its other projects: Thunderbird, a popular e-mail client for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. It’s not “dead,” as some tech news sites have proclaimed, but it will remain pretty much the way it is now for the foreseeable future, with no major updates other than security and stability fixes.

Thunderbird itself has always been the free alternative to Microsoft Outlook for people who just needed to pull mail from a POP or IMAP service. Though there’s nothing keeping fans from continuing to use Thunderbird, this change is a good opportunity to look at other options.

New Hippo Techie: Masters of their domains

Between January and May, anyone with $185,000 could apply to create a new TLD. Applications were taken by the company that administers the TLD system, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). On June 13, they released the list of applications, complete with names and e-mail addresses of the applicants. Some of the more than 1,900 applications are predictable — four companies requested .search, and .porn makes an appearance too — but even discounting the ones made up of non-Latin characters, some are just spectacular.

New Hippo Techie: Change your passwords now

So, uh … you hear about LinkedIn getting hacked? Something like six million passwords were “affected,” according to the Washington Post. While LinkedIn notified the “affected” users by e-mail, it’s still a good idea to head over there right now and change your password, since, admit it, you haven’t changed it anytime recently anyway. Also change other passwords that are the same because, haha, those accounts are now vulnerable as well.
